August 2010 Newsletter

Summer is here and the weather has warmed up nicely, although we could do with some rain to keep everyone happy. It seems a long time ago when we had deep snow and ice.

Did you come to our Fun Day in July? We saw some of our four legged customers, which was nice. We raised £105.00 for the Labrador Rescue Trust, so thanks to all who bought a tombola ticket.

Competition Winner

Mrs Andrews who guessed correctly 639 won the “guess the number of biscuits” competition. Her dogs Oscar and Morris I’m sure will be pleased.

feeding sparrowThe wild birds are as dependent on the food we put out now as in the winter. The ground is very hard and dry; the birds that require live food are struggling. The seed-eaters need a good source of food and they both need water to drink.

Have You Thought About …..?

Have you thought about keeping Chickens, as it is now the most popular pet? They are quite easy and economical to keep. All they need is somewhere dry and safe to sleep, food & water and some space during the day. The bonus if you keep hens is of course the eggs.

Pasture raised chickens feedingYour chickens would require a large coop & run and an area for them to roam. The coop provides a place to sleep and rest safely, free from predators.

Straw and wood chippings are good for bedding. Some hay or straw in a nest box makes it nice for hens to nest and lay eggs & easier for you to collect them.

Drinkers with fresh water are essential for a healthy bird. A supply of grain, with some higher protein feed, greenery and grit is also required.
Chickens like to be in flocks but 4-6 hens would be happy and provide a plentiful supply of eggs.

We can supply all the equipment you require to start up as a poultry keeper.

From The Shop Floor – Woody’s Words of Wisdom

WoodyAs I told you last month I have had an operation to replace a hip.

All is going well but I have to have 6 weeks cage rest. I do go out in the garden for some gentle exercise.

Still I’m halfway through my confinement. So I will be back on the shop floor soon.

Apple has been keeping my bed warm for me and Mum brings home the treats that customers have kindly bought for me, thanks.
