February 2010 Newsletter

The days are getting longer and so we now look forward to the Spring. This month contains Valentines day, and so don’t forget to show your pet the love and attention they deserve.

fleaThis could include checking the last time you wormed them and seeing when they last had their flea treatment. Did you know that fleas can pupate for up to 11 months and so they can live quite happily in your nice warm house during the winter.

Unfortunately, fleas are an all year round problem and should be kept on top of. Worming should be done every two to three months and so watch out for signs in case you are not sure when it was last done. If you’re in any doubt then please feel free to speak to us, we’re here to help you.

Canines and Their Canines

Do you clean your dog’s teeth? If you start when they are a puppy or quite young it is quite easy for your dog to accept the process, however older animals are often not quite so keen. For these circumstances there are additives that you can put into their food to help with this, as they help to soften the plaque which then comes off when your dog eats hard food, such as biscuits.

As we also keep garden products, the greenfingered ones amongst you will be preparing for the coming season. Seed potatoes need ’setting out’ to sprout and onion sets can be planted when the weather allows, as can broad beans and peas.

Once again keep helping the wild birds and they will reward you during the summer months by eating a wide range of garden pests. Please see our guide on wild bird food here. This will explain what to feed them and importantly, what not to feed them.

From The Shop Floor – Woody’s Words of Wisdom

The long month of January is now over and as the daylight increases, I can now have longer walks. I especially like the mud and water and always have a good shake when I come back in. Its not my fault if the house has been cleaned!

MitchThe other dog in the household that I was talking about before is Mitch. You can see a photo of him on the right. he’s a rough coated Jack Russell and is 20 months old – he also thinks he knows everything!

He doesn’t come to the shop very often as he goes with dad in the truck. I try to teach him things the Labrador way, but he still thinks he knows best.

We got on well but it is nice when he is asleep. Perhaps he will grow up one day. I’ll more news for you next week, but its now time for me to have another sleep – its been a long day here at the shop.
