October brings us well & truly into autumn.
The colour of the leaves as they change to the softer shades of the season, let’s hopes the mild weather continues well into the month.
This time of year brings the risk of harvest mite infestation to your dog. The mites are only a problem in the first active stage of their adult life cycle.
They are found in long grass & matted vegetation & on clods of earth. The signs of infestation by the larvae are clusters of orange-red dust that attach to the animals hair & cause severe skin irritations.
With the night time temperatures falling it is time to consider the small animals we keep as pets outside, rabbits, guinea pigs etc.
They should be able to shelter from the winter weather. Check those hutches are waterproof & windproof; they can be moved into a shed or garage to protect them in server conditions. Most will be happy as long as they can get out of the wind & are dry, with plenty of hay or straw for bedding.
I have been lucky enough to have been to Botswana on safari during September. I feel very privileged to have seen a wide range of animals, birds & reptiles in their natural habitat.
The animals survive by getting on with their daily routine, not taking much notice of the humans sat in a truck watching & photographing them.
You don’t see bored wild animals, they fill their days existing, thinking about food & water, & resting from the high temperatures. Our pets can suffer from boredom when left on their own. We should stimulate them with plenty of exercise, play & toys.
As the days get shorter we should still give our dogs the same amount of exercise & attention.
Yay! It’s great to be back to work after my 12 weeks convalescing after my hip replacement.
It was a long tedious time I can tell you, but have been well looked after by my family.
I am now on the road to recovery, can use all four legs now, but still have to take it easy no rushing & running around in the fields like Mitch & Apple!
But I get to go swimming in a lovely heated pool, it’s called hydrotherapy. It’s a form of exercise to help to strengthen & build up the muscles in my rear legs after a long time of inactivity. I just love the water, so it is great fun.
Apple has done a lovely job in keeping my bed in the shop warm, & keeping up with the meeting & greeting of customers which I taught her to do. The shop is still busy so I will be looking for things to tell in the next issue.
